    Description

    Description:
Very rare and very early Beautiful French Early Art Deco Piel Freres Buckle Set featuring Hand Carved Translucent Red Bakelite.
This stunning buckle set is as rare as it is beautiful.
The piece must have been made during a small window of time
between 1922 to 1925, because the Bakelite Corporation was formed in 1922, and
the French firm of  Piel Freres closed in1925.
The buckles, at first glance, could easily be mistaken for carved crystal. However, when tested (with 409) the results were positive (yellow color residue) for Bakelite.
The translucent red panels of Bakelite seem to almost glow from within due to the reflective nature of their mounts which also enhances the appearance of the decorative carving as well.
The Bakelite panels are quite thick with
slightly rounded convex tops/fronts that are deeply hand carved with a lovely floral design in the center; the outer edges curve/slope downward and are carved with a classic deco stepped linear type pattern.
The back of the buckle is of silver colored metal and bears the Piel Freres maker's mark but is otherwise unmarked (including for metal content which is unknown as untested).
I am not an expert on the different colors of Bakelite, but my best educated guess is that it is cherry
or cherry amber color - I would love to hear from those more knowledgeable on the subject.
Overall this piece is in good antique/vintage condition - upon close inspection and/or magnification there are some signs of age appropriate wear - there are no chips to the Bakelite but there is some surface wear such scuffs, smudges and very fine scratches.
Please continue to read below for more details on condition as well as
    measurements.
Listing pictures are to be considered an essential part of the item(s) description so please carefully review all of the 9 close-up & enlargeable pictures to evaluate for yourself
(keep in mind that appearance (such as coloration)
may vary somewhat due to lighting conditions, perspective, technological
    limitations, etc.
    Approximate Measurements:
combined length of approx. 3.1/4" x 1.1/3 wide
*Please rely on the measurements in the listing description and not the listing pictures when evaluating size, as my photos are often enlarged.
    Condition (Specifics):
Very good antique/vintage condition that includes any details previously mentioned in above description, as well as
some overall age appropriate wear (i.e., surface scuffs, smudges, scratches, nicks or miniscule
flea bite, patina and other surface wear, etc.).  If desired, this piece could benefit from a careful clean and/or polish. Please see enlarged pictures to evaluate for yourself.
    Condition (General):
I do my best to describe my items accurately.
