Description

Later print from the original US Naval Institute photograph of a Japanese kamikaze pilot saluting as he receives his sortie orders - c.-1945.
In the closing months of the war, Japanese pilots received their orders to become kamikaze, meaning “divine wind” in Japanese. The suicidal blitz of the kamikazes revealed Japan’s desperation in the final months of World War II.
Most of Japan’s top pilots were dead, but youngsters needed little training to take planes full of explosives and crash them into ships. At Okinawa, they sank 30 ships and killed almost 5,000 Americans.
Photograph measures 5 x 7 inches and is in excellent condition with no bends, tears, or creases and is very sharp and has strong tones with good contrast and clarity.  Back has taped down captions (see scan).
