Description
High school annualincluding students and teachers, activities and sports, local advertisement, and including senior and future jazz great Eric Dolphy. Great photos and vintage design.
Eric Dolphy
was an incendiary jazz alto saxophonist, flautist, and bass clarinetist who extended t
he vocabulary and boundaries of the alto sax and was among the earliest significant jazz flute soloists.
His improvisational style was characterized by the use of wide
intervals
, in addition to using an array of
extended techniiques
to emulate the sounds of human voices and animals. Although Dolphy's work is sometimes classified as
free jazz
, his compositions and solos were often rooted in tonal
(abstracted) bepop
harmony and melodic lines that suggest the influences of modern classical composers such as
Bela Bartok and Igor Stravinsky, and modernist Edgard Varese
. He played significantly with such greats as Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Ron Carter, and Freddie Hubbard. His recordings include: Outward Bound, Far Cry, Out There, At the Five Spot, Conversations, and Eric Dolphy in Europe. Posthumous recordings include: Out to Lunch, Here and There, Iron Man, Last Date, and others. Dolphy died tragically at 36 years old at the height of his powers. He was soon after inducted into the Down Beat Magazine Hall of Fame.
