"MERRY-GO-ROUND": An ORIGINAL FLYER designed by FRIDOLF JOHNSON advertising the "Merry-go-Round" PINBALL machine distributed by D. Gottlieb & Co.
Chicago, Illinois: D. Gottlieb & Co., [1934]. An original 12 inch high by 18-1/2 inch wide color flyer with attached tear-off strip. When folded, the flyer is titled
"A New Smashing Idea! / Merry-Go-Round ... by the World's largest Makers of Amusement Machines".
When first opened the flyer announces the
"World's Greatest Attraction"
on one of the folding panels above a color illustration of a carnival barker announcing the new attraction to a crowd. Once fully opened, the flyer reveals an illustration of the pinball machine at left. Titled
"Merry-Go-Round"
at the top, the machine is described as
"A phenomenal pin game utilizing a brand new irresistible playing idea"
. A narrow tear off strip along the right offers a special
"confidential operators' price".
Folded for mailing, the flyer has some minor wear to the edges of the folds. Very good.
The flyer advertises the 3 rotating playfield discs as
"New Aluminum Roto Discs".
The game has a bell which is battery operated. Other than the bell the action is
"purely mechanical"
. The game has a
"Gold Bakelite Finish Playing Field"
and is housed in a 40 inch by 20 inch
"Walnut Finished Cabinet".
The game offers
"10 Balls For 5 cents"

An attractive flyer designed by
Fridolf Johnson
who was then art director for the Frankel-Rose Agency in Chicago. An illustrator and artist as well as a fine pressman Fridolf Johnson was an editor of American Artist Magazine until his retirement in the 1970's. As a graphic artist, he designed title panels for Hollywood movies and art & typography for advertising as well as dust jacket illustrations. He wrote and illustrated his own children's books in addition to other works. He also compiled and edited the Knopf book
