Description
Vernor's Ginger Ale is one of the oldest branded soft drinks, first served to the public in 1866by Detroiter James Vernor, a well-respected pharmacist.
For several years, Vernor’s soda fountain was the only place where one could purchase the beverage. As demand grew Vernor began to sell his product to other soda fountains, requiring them to install special equipment in order to properly serve the soda. As its fame grew, Vernor’s became available throughout the Midwest.
Vernor’s and the City of Detroit grew together. A massive sign that illuminated the company logo was located along the Detroit River where ferries took passengers to Windsor, Ontario and Bob-lo and Belle Isle.
A highly carbonated beverage, Vernor’s was often used to cure stomachaches or mixed with lemon juice and served hot to nurse a sore throat or cough. A popular dessert beverage, the Boston Cooler, pairing vanilla ice cream with Vernor’s soda. Sometime at the end of the 1950s, the name lost its apostrophe and became simply Vernors. That means that one bottle in this lot is pre-1958 and the others are around 1960, as are the cork-lined bottle caps. The 8 ounce bottles all measure about 8.5 inches (22 cm) by 2 inches (5 cm). The oldest bottle has a bit of abrasion along its protruding edges but is still crystal clear. The bottle caps, from a subsidiary bottling plant in western Michigan's Dowagiac, are NOS unused and ready to crimp.
A nice lot for the Vernor's collector. The bottle caps could be framed and displayed with the bottles. Great in a recreated country or general store.
