    Description

Offered for your consideration is a vintage
    PILOT
    MYU-series black stripe
    felt tip pen or Feltliner
, manufactured in Japan c.1977. As you may know, PILOT was founded in 1918 and is Japan’s oldest and largest pen/pencil manufacturer. So large, in fact, that they have subsidiaries worldwide including one in the U.S. that opened in 1972.
This hard-to-find PILOT pen was a series companion to their wildly-desirable M-500BS black stripe integral-nib fountain pen. The MYU/Murex line—standard and black stripe—was only offered on the Japanese market, and they’re not even easy to find there any longer.
The pen features a metal cap and barrel—stainless steel, I believe—with recessed, vertical black-enameled striations, chrome-plated steel clip, and black plastic writing grip. This example bears a Japanese company barrel imprint,
    Mitsui O.S.K. Lines
, but it’s not overly apparent.
So, please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this superlative PILOT black stripe pen should join your collection.
This PILOT black stripe pen is in clean, excellent condition. It measures 4 15/16” long, 5½” with cap posted atop, and ⅜” wide. There are no dings or scratches to the metal, and the black stripes and logo lettering are well-pronounced. There are a couple
    faint
scuffs up top where the cap is posted, but that’s about it. Plus, the cap clicks securely to the barrel and the clip rests tight against the cap with no gap. This vintage PILOT simply exudes the quality expected from their top line and presents beautifully to both eye and touch!
What’s more, the refill used in this pen—referred to as a Feltliner in an online MYU review that I read—was a precursor to PILOT’s Fineliner and gel rollerball cartridges. In this pen, the refill I found is marked PILOT Sign Pen Refill and is
    dry/empty
    .
It appears to be a standard ISO specification like the German DIN standard, but lacks the small extra “shoulder” about ¼” behind the point. I found a German-made cartridge in my rollerball supply without that extra shoulder that fits and works perfectly! It’s only partly full, but will keep the pen writing very nicely till you locate the correct PILOT cartridge.  The empty PILOT refill will also be included.
As pictured and described, this superb PILOT black stripe MYU-series pen is offered at a competitive price.
